Spirit Modern Flair–The Art of Joan Lok” is a 96-page full-color album containing 72 pieces of Joan
Lok’s paintings from 1996 to 2008. The book is bilingual in English and
traditional Chinese, with a foreword by Dr. Sik Fuk Chow who has written books
on Chinese brush painting including the Lingnam School of Art, published by the
Guangdong Press; and an introduction of the artist by Mr. Fong Yuen Ng, the

Joan Lok creates luminous floral paintings that link Asian tradition to an adventurous, modern viewpoint.
Born in Hong Kong, Joan came to America in 1983 after winning an international
cultural exchange scholarship. She exhibits her artwork nationally and
internationally. Joan won many awards including the Best of Show from the
Sumi-e Society of America and Sumi-e Artists of Canada Joint Exhibition in
2009, the Kyoto Education Council Award in Japan in 2011. Her masterful
landscape won the 2005 National Cherry Blossom Festival Art Contest, was made
into posters and merchandises, creating the most prolific festival for the
organizer. Her artworks are featured in “The Best of Flower Painting”,
“Stroke of Genius”, “Chinese Landscape Painting Techniques for Watercolors”, and her art album “Ancient Spirit Modern Flair – The

Joan
promotes the awareness and appreciation of the art of brush painting outside
Asia. Joan served as the National President of the Sumi-e Society of
America for ten years (2002-2012). She was the Vice President of the
Lingnam Association of America, and signature member of the Baltimore
Watercolor Society, and the Potomac Valley Watercolorists. Among much
recognition, Joan is honored in Who’s Who of American Art, and Who’s Who in
American Women. She served as a Commissioner of the Maryland Governor’s
Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs, and received two Maryland
Governor’s Citations recognizing her contribution. Joan taught Asian
